Tual de jouy is a fabric with a characteristic monochromatic ornament, which Christian Dior loved so much. We recall the history of the Tuile de Jouy and consider how to use such a fabric today.

What is toile de jouy and how did this fabric and ornament appear?
Craftine
“Tual” translated from French means “fabric” or “canvas”. This word in France denotes, as a rule, natural cotton and linen fabrics. A "toile de jouy" would rather be written as a "toile de jouy," since Jouy here is a proper name.
Royal art palace
Initially, back in the XVIII century, such a fabric with a characteristic one-color ornament was produced at a factory in the village of Jouy-en-José near Versailles. The painting was based on Chinese porcelain, which was then popular in Europe. The motifs decorating the fabric depicted landscape sketches, small genre scenes, animals, still lifes, and illustrated ancient stories. The pattern was characteristic (and remains) of the repeatability of motives and the fact that more often (but not necessarily) they are all made in one color. Blue and its shades are usually used, as well as red, black, purple, green. The background is usually white, light beige, the color of an unbleached canvas. The tuile de jouy pattern is used not only for textiles, but also for ceramics, wallpaper and so on. Today, they are decorated not only with cotton and linen, but with almost any fabric and materials.

Tual de Jouy and Dior
Dior
Popular in the world of high fashion, the pattern and fabric of the Tuile de Jouy owe Christian Dior. In preparation for the opening of his first haberdashery boutique in Paris on Montaigne Avenue, Dior invited Victor Granpier to decorate the room. Granpierre took as a basis pastoral scenes from a painting by Jean-Baptiste Yue. The whole boutique, which opened in 1947, was decorated with motifs in the spirit of the Tual de Jouy. Dior loved this ornament no less than a flower. Drawing toile de jouy has become one of the symbols of the brand.

Classic ornament is trending again
Dior
Today Tual de Jouy is experiencing a new wave of popularity. The ornament appeared in the latest collections of Dior and not only. It is used by Acne Studios, Tibi, Oscar de la Renta, Twin-Set, Chloé and other brands. Moreover, the classic French print adorns not only fabrics: it can appear, for example, on knitted knitwear, bags and shoes. And still, the Tuile de Jouy is popular as a pattern for home textiles, including bedding, as a decoration for ceramics and wallpaper.

What to sew from fabric toile de jouy?
Chloé
In fact, a fabric with a drawing of a toile de jouy can be used like any other textile with a plain floral ornament. Due to the fact that the pattern is now at the peak of popularity, it can be worn, both combining with something monophonic, and putting on it from head to toe.
